The damage caused by the tsunami for those living along the coastline in the Hambantota and Ambalantota areas was immense and devastating. Many lost their family, friends, home and lands. After signing a MOU with the District Secretary, Hambantota, on the 10th of February 2005, we commenced our Tsunami Housing Project to relocate 58 families who lost their homes and were living in relief camps.
The 58 houses were constructed, under supervision, in the Chithragala (inland) area of Hambantota. The project commenced in
April 2005 and the houses were handed over to the carefully selected beneficiaries in November 2005, in the presence of the Honourable Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries, Mr. Chamal Rajapaksha.
Each house was built on 20 perches of land area with all the basic amenities including complete electrical wiring, plumbing and separate sewage and waste water disposal systems. The houses have sufficient land around them to build extensions or to cultivate crops. The housing project was the first project to be completed under our tsunami relief efforts, utilizing monies in the Hirdaramani Memorial Trust Fund.
