Hirdaramani goes green

As one of the pioneering and leading exporters in Sri Lanka’s apparel sector, the Hirdaramani Group takes pride in being one of the first companies in the country to incorporate environmental consciousness into its business strategy. The world is facing a "transformative watershed" in society about how to deal with environmental and energy issues. The general view has been that industrial development leads to damage the environment and the human interference has caused mounting disaster on nature. As such, protecting the environment has begun to receive wide spread acceptance.

Businesses are currently able to take advantage of the "Green Wave" sweeping the globe. In addition to this, the rise of environmentally-oriented stakeholders, including governments, environmental activists, and even retailers such as M&S and others have sharpened the focus on the need for suppliers to make themselves more aware of the environment.

This has resulted in the launch of the Hirdaramani Green Initiative with its model green factory, CKT Apparel (Pvt) Limited, located in Agalawatte, in the Kalutara District. The concept behind developing a model factory is the company’s awareness of its impact on the environment, society and the economy.

The new CKT factory embodies all the features of a ‘green’ business. The group has considered all aspects of the building as well as the manufacturing process itself. The innovative developments include evaporator cooling, recycled building materials, solar power generated electricity, reducing waste matter, recycling and reuse of water, rain water harvesting, green machinery and innovative alternative lighting systems. The factory is also striving for Gold certification of LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design), a prestigious US qualification in innovative environmental practices.

The direct benefits that the Hirdaramani Group envisages include to:

- Reduce energy consumption
- Reduce water usage
- Manage waste
- Improve indoor air quality
- Lower carbon footprint

Through this initiative the group is of the view that a balance can be struck between economy and the ecology and wish to demonstrate their commitment to protect the environment through sustainable development to meet the aspirations of future generations.
